RETI SAKS
PRINT WHISPERER
The artist's retrospective creates settings and stories for Reti Saks' visual character whose inner psychology the author has explored throughout her career.
The walls of Haus Gallery's two exhibition floors are covered in Reti Saks' prints, presenting her black and white, delicate narrative world where the inner dialogues and stories of the artist become the inner dialogues and stories of the viewer. The spaces created by Reti Saks offer an opportunity to escape into a world which feels both universally existential and personal.
What makes the exhibition special is its scale. Prints, which are traditionally placed in a more intimate environment, have been spread out, offering the narrative an opportunity to unfold over the course of the two floors of the gallery. This way, the viewer walks along the emotionally colourful, sometimes surreal spaces of Reti Saks' black and white landscapes, following seemingly different but similar characters, each of whom has an emotion, experience or a story to share. The titles also add additional layers to the works: In the Light of the Dark, Slide to Unlock, Deep and Distinct, Against the Light, Manna from Heaven, Apple of Wisdom, Letter to Me, At Glance, As Above, So Down Under, Landscape from the Other Side, Skyblanket...
The title chosen for the exhibition by the artist is "Reti Saks, Print Whisperer," referring to the author's personal relationship with her works which are her way of communicating with the world. The exhibition also includes Reti Saks' sculptures.
In contrast to her complex visual language, Reti Saks remains simple in her description of the exhibition: 'The exhibition presents a selection of prints from the last 15 years. Ten of the larger works originate from this year, developing out of the illustration process for three books. A number of works have been previously exhibited at Estonian Artists' Association annual exhibitions as well as at international and solo exhibitions.'
Reti Saks is a printmaker, sculptor and book illustrator born on 3 June 1960 in Pärnu. Saks studied at the State Applied Art School. She has been a member of the Estonian Artists' Association since 1991. Saks has been exhibiting since 1983, having participated in numerous international art projects, both as a printmaker and an illustrator, and has won and been named the recipient of multiple awards.
Reti Saks thanks the Estonian Artists' Association for supporting the exhibition.
The exhibition will remain open until 22 June.
