PAUL KORMAŠOV

Paul Kormašov (b. 1989) is the youngest member of the artist family bearing the same surname, which includes well-known artists Nikolai, Orest, and Andrei. Paul, the son of Andrei Kormašov, is a freelance painter who graduated from the Pallas University of Applied Sciences in 2013. For many years, he has lived in Berlin  –  a mecca for contemporary culture and a magnet for artists from various fields in search of opportunity. Success has also followed Paul: his works are already part of numerous private collections across several countries, including Estonia, Germany, the United States, and Scandinavia.

What stands out in Kormašov’s paintings is his distinctive artistic voice, rooted in a profound sense of composition. He demonstrates remarkable skill in handling the essential elements of abstract painting – color, form, line, and rhythm. His light-saturated tones and colors – whether soft or sharply contrasting – are always balanced and expressive, subtly evoking emotional impulses in the viewer. The ability to evoke an emotional response is, after all, one of the defining features of masterful abstract art.

It is also noteworthy that, even within his abstract visual language – where figurative elements occasionally surface – he manages to convey recognisable references to natural phenomena or human-made objects, such as urban landscapes or the underwater world. Through his work, the artist communicates stories, sensations, and fleeting moments – experiences that can be clearly perceived. Yet in abstract art, it is vital for the viewer to form a personal connection with the work. Paul leaves space for exactly that: the freedom to craft our own imagined narrative from what we see, sense, or read in the painting’s title.
