Olev Subbi’s undated work, probably from his student days, introduces us to a young artist who is still finding his way. There is still no trace of the layered, brightly coloured painting style of the later decades, as Subbi uses colour to depict a melancholic winter landscape. The focus here is not yet on colour, but on atmosphere, and instead of bold compositions, Subbi is looking for a solid approach where nothing disturbs the peace of the landscape.
