Peet Aren was a remarkable avant-gardist in Estonia whose paintings often displayed a strikingly uncanny sense of space. The realistic cityscape in his works transformed into something alive and pulsating, breathing and emotional. While in exile, Aren frequently painted motifs from his homeland but also captured scenes from his surroundings abroad. It is likely that he painted this work while standing right at the edge of the park. On both sides rise tall trees – a classical compositional device where, in addition to the actual frame, another frame seems to be painted within the picture itself. The main focal point of the painting is the triumphal arch, rendered with respectful attention to detail. The other buildings are brought onto the canvas more through the effect of color – a white high-rise or a skyscraper fading into the mist in the distance. The tiny car and bustling people appear as temporal miniatures next to the imposing and seemingly eternal architecture.
