In Estonian painting, there are surprisingly few so-called “pure” seascapes, where the sea is not merely a decorative element but dominates the entire canvas. Trained in the tradition of realistic Russian painting, Jegorov mastered the illusion of reality, skillfully depicting wave crests, the water’s gradation from light to dark, and more. The few swimmers are rendered with quick, individual brushstrokes, enlivening the expansive view of the sea.

The year this painting was completed, Jegorov celebrated his 70th birthday, and a major retrospective was held at the Tallinn Art Hall. A newspaper noted: “He stands out particularly for his meticulous and skillful drawing down to the finest details, and for his keen sense of color in landscapes. His work is distinguished by a positive, one might even say exalted, approach to the subject, which makes his paintings life-affirming.”

It is likely that the same summer, the elder master went on a holiday trip to Jūrmala. Even there, however, he could not refrain from painting, producing a naturalistic study right on the beach.
