During his career, Evald Okas painted hundreds of works, very often focusing on the female figure. Okas tended to move close to his model, frequently depicting them in close-up. He added attributes to the figures, and it was not uncommon for him to introduce something mysterious and enigmatic into the pictorial space. In this way, Okas’s nudes became exotic, and the introduction of a certain strangeness was always to his liking—hence he also painted so many travel scenes. The year this painting was completed coincided with Okas’s 60th birthday and his major solo exhibition at the Tallinn Art Hall. At that time, a newspaper noted: “On a symbolic level, the female nude dominates Okas’s recent works… From paintings to ex libris, numerous female nudes symbolize youth, optimism, and life itself.”
