Peeter Laurits is a playful intellectual who blends together constellations of different eras and cultural layers within a single artistic space, this time enlisting the help of the Trickster, whom he guides into the lush forests of Eden. An explanatory dictionary describes the Trickster as follows: a mythical, often animal-shaped figure who plays pranks, invents new things, and participates in the creation of culture or even the entire world. In this sense, the greatest Trickster might well be the artist himself, playfully picking out and assembling paradoxical harmonies of ethical and aesthetic visuals in his exhibition works — speaking about what is important to speak about.
With this exhibition, Laurits brings together the timeless philosophy of Eden, summarizing the themes and ideas also explored in the accompanying catalogue. Through the selected excerpts presented here, the catalogue offers insight into the author's current lines of thought—an author who always keeps a finger on the pulse of both time and timelessness. It speaks of the following:
-
In times of great change, we must cope with unexpected and complex situations. This becomes much easier if we let go of the Euclidean anxiety disorder—of straight hedges, right-angled garden beds, orderly spaces, and clear oppositions.
-
Might we not need new, fluid units of measurement for certain things, such as biodiversity or complexity? Process-ontology-based units that would allow graceful movement between different scales and tempos—modelling processes within time that unfolds simultaneously in multiple directions.
-
Could we ever exit war economies and extractivism in any other way than by turning the hardest-to-measure basic resources—clean water, clean air, and biodiversity—into balance-sheet items? By stretching Excel tables into three dimensions.
-
If we allow individuality to step out of isolation and instead sense ourselves as networks composed of all kinds of relationships and memories, our sense of being becomes lighter and more carefree.
