Reasons, why the name of Aarne Miikmaa (until the year 1939 Harald Oskar Miikman) is rare in the Estonian art world, obviously originate from his early departure. Miikmaa, having deceased already at the age of 34, first received a many-sided education in art history and philosophy, parallelly also visited the studio school of Ants Laikmaa. The wish to paint himself took him to Pallas to become the student of Ado Vabbe. It is known that in 1940 Miikmaa still worked in the Tartu Art Museum, but two days after the arrival of the year 1942 he passed away.
In the creation of Miikmaa first of all are mentioned portraits and landscape paintings. Winter landscape first of all catches the eye with its bold handling of colours that at closer inspection still turns out to be subject to certain thought schemes. For instance, we undoubtedly proclaim a seemingly random fortuitous white dot to be the Moon.
The work is printed in the catalogue of the exhibition of Arne Miikmaa, having taken place in the year 1969 in the Tartu Art Museum (no 22) and is a superb example of the great talent of the young artist.
