Olev Subbi has been known in the first range for his dainty and fine colour delights. Therefore people have often taken no notice of the motifs of his paintings that open up Subbi’s creation from another new angle. He often turns to the Estonian nature and way of life, depicting the fishermen of Võrtsjärv or the arches of the Kolga manor. Still, the chosen motifs are not random: in their essence they belong to Estonia of the 1930ies. Also the dairy is the sign of the past – of the idyllic time, when village people got together in the dairy for discussing life matters. Subbi is a romantic: he is painting past in the present, creating in this manner a kind of “parallel world” (Enn Põldroos). This can be detected in his motifs, composition and colour handling. It is a parallel, but still crossing with the present day.
