Sigrid Uiga

“Saaremaa” is in Uiga’s vision first of all just an island. When Konrad Mägi saw in Saaremaa an unlimited amount of possibilities for colour experiments, then Uiga brings to the fore the scanty nature of the island. In addition to rocks and junipers is especially emphasized the exaggerated darkened sea. This is a concrete landmark, which detaches Saaremaa from its surroundings. The sea together with the sky, covering almost half of the picture’s surface, are the means by which Uiga emphasized the detachment of the island, its originality and seclusion.
