The life of Eduard Maaser was spent in Tartu, where he studied as a schoolboy in Hugo Treffner’s gymnasium and also in the “Pallas” art school. No wonder that 27-year-old Maaser chooses as the motif of one his water-colours a scene that he knows the best. In addition to a joyful cityscape we can also see here Maaser’s careful attempt to bring out the originality of Tartu. Here meet slightly ramshackle houses, introducing into the work a somewhat suburban accent and a car, being the symbol of the modern city.
