During the Soviet era several artists, having emerged to the front in the 1930ies, became a kind of legends, who kept for decades alive the best traditions of the ”Pallas” school of painting. Lepo Mikko was undoubtedly among them one of the most significant ones and this had an understandable reason: he knew, what and how to keep. These two works are rare examples of Mikko’s creation. While having a closer look, we can see that Mikko is light and free. Here and there can be seen the preliminary work in pencil, the paint does not cover all of the details with harrassing dryness, but plunges over the border-lines. Slightly more cobalt blue, one slice of idyllic landscape, some women and horses, everything must be mixed with illuminating and undisclosing light, pure freedom for glazing and also all of the other colours. Serve hot – approximately in this manner Mikko could describe the recipe of his works.
