The creation of Aleksander Vardi belongs to those examples, where an unexpected set of themes can diversely differ from the rest of the picture. Vardi, having won recognition as a dedicated city observer and a landscape painter, painted unexpectedly at the end of the 1950ies and at the beginning of the 1960ies a number of abstract paintings, painting of which he continued for ten more years. These are works, where the professor has taken to pieces these parts, of which his panoramic views actually consist of. Here Vardi carefully divides the colours between different forms and then tries to put them together. Differently from the joyful colour inebriation of Endel Kõks, Vardi is considerably more deliberate, careful and better-planned. Relations, which were measured with almost mathematical exactness, created great attention, and until now this period is called Vardi’s second flourishing period after leaving from Paris at the end of the 1930ies. “ Vardi at high level,” remarks Indrek Hirv, “woke again up at the sixties, in abstract paintings.” And then adds: We see a courageous artist’s nature. We see the preparedness to take risks.
