Jaan Grünberg was able to study at the golden triplet, teaching art in Estonia: first Kristjan Raud, then in Pallas Konrad Mägi and Ado Vabbe. The most important teacher of Grünberg can still be considered the biggest adviser of the Estonian art between the two World Wars - Paris. First he was in France for seven years in the end of the twenties - in the beginning of the thirties, after that again during the period 1937 - 1939, when he was forced to return together with Wiiralt to Estonia. Because of the occupation Grünberg had to leave again, but this time for Sweden.
Creation of Grünberg is first of all valued as the most superb example of late impressionism in the Estonian painting. Being again in Paris in the end of 1930ies, Grünberg concentrated on monotypes, the extraordinary brightness and sense of colours is also carried into the works that have already been made in Estonia in the beginning of the 1940ies. A city view is a kind of continuation to the Paris creation, giving once again evidence of the unforgetfulness of the experiences of France, but also proving the co-effect of the French elegance and delicate sense of taste on the Grünberg creation.
