Berber Girl with a Camel. 1940
Vernis mou. Plm 49.3 x 39.9 cm (framed)

The much reproduced and admired classic print by Eduard Wiiralt was based on what he saw on a trip to Morocco from 1938–1939, where Wiiralt lived in Marrakech. As always, Wiiralt portrays the animal as a personality, a subject with its own psychology and will. On this page there is an interesting dialogue between a Berber girl and a camel, showing the girl’s respect for the big animal as a subject. The graphical sheet seems to exude African heat, which has infused all the plants, although the direct scorching sun has been left out of the picture.
