The three graces are a recurring motif in Western art history. The three women here seem to have different characters and attitudes, but Wiiralt has portrayed all of them with the same facial expression. Wiiralt drew or engraved from nature. A male artist depicting a nude female has been the normative situation in Western art history. So the woman in the foreground looks at the artist, or Eduard Wiiralt, as an unattainable love? Does the male artist depict the nude woman merely as an object? Wiiralt has worked the surface of the image thoroughly, so that we can distinguish factures and materials, in the middle of which the body of the central woman stands out luminously.
