In the background a bright sky with cumulus clouds, in the foreground a cheerful nature view. The artist observes the field of view from a rather low level. Something is placed in the center of the composition, bathing in a spot of light, almost like a sacred image. Everyday Estonian nature, nothing special, yet the landscape carries a message that makes the scene somehow special.
The painters of the South Estonian school represent a different mindset than in Tallinn, where our artistic life is concentrated. In Tartu, painting education is still based on the memory of the Pallas painting school in the inter-war period - here a picturesque painting means something different than in Tallinn. It can be appreciated, it has a definite meaning, history and context.
