1978
August Künnapu’s works have been characterised through the medium of pop art: optimistic colours and a pronounced, naive selection of themes. He has become known for his overtly joyful themes, and instead of resorting to the tricks of his trade as a painter, he bets on sincere honesty. The adventurous characters in his pictures do not have psychological depth, but are rather tokens painted against sharply opposing coloured backgrounds. In this way, August addresses the meanings and stereotypes attached to such tokens by society, culture, media and the like.
