Raivo Korstnik was one of the most influential artists of his time, whose work did not follow a single avant-garde path but opened new avenues here and there. He often depicted so-called “non-places” in urban or rural settings—locations with nothing striking, sometimes even slightly abandoned or forgotten. These were spots that typically went unnoticed. For Korstnik, these overlooked places held their own charm and allure.

In this painting, Korstnik explores multiple layers of the urban space: we see a glamorous view of the old town, next to it an industrial landscape marked by a tall chimney, and in the foreground, one of those “non-places.” Yet, it is precisely in these overlooked areas that Korstnik found the greatest opportunities to experiment with color, introducing new and unexpected tones throughout the composition.
