In his youth, Felix Randel was a rebel whose cubist works provoked both astonishment and admiration. In his later years, like many Estonian avant-gardists, Randel turned toward a more realistic and idyllic mode of expression. This work, likely painted directly from nature, employs a rather restrained color palette, where bright areas are accentuated by subtle strokes of color — above all by the dramatic sky and its reflection on the sea’s surface. The small sailboat, though modest in size, is essential: it transforms the seascape from a mere view into a scene with an event, a narrative. Through it, the landscape becomes a story about human longing and the deep interconnectedness between people and nature.
