By 1980, Valerian Loik was already an elderly and experienced artist who remained unshaken by modern trends, continuing to paint places he loved in a realist style that was both colorfully joyful and intense. He created numerous views of the Old Town throughout his career.

A year before the completion of this work, a newspaper noted: “One of the most expressive sections of V. Loik’s work consists of cityscapes. This genre is favored by many of our older-generation artists, and the picturesque corners of our Old Town have been examined and described from every angle. Valerian Loik has not broken the traditional compositional schemes in his Old Town motifs, yet he has presented several views more forcefully, stylishly, and temperamentally than usual. It must therefore be acknowledged that artist Valerian Loik controls his means with confidence, paints productively in contrast to many older-generation artists, and remains convincingly true to his own distinctive style.”
