A 21-year-old Aarne Miikmaa’s painting reflects the influence of his teacher at the time, Ants Laikmaa. Miikmaa chose pastel as his medium and depicts old, archaic farm buildings. Unlike Laikmaa, however, Miikmaa’s colors are bright and vigorous, with the blue sky exulting. He has divided his work into distinct sections, giving each its own color scheme: the greenery of the farmyard in the foreground, then bluish stones with strong, sharp outlines of a stone fence, the brownish-green leaves of the trees, and finally the pale blue of the sky. That same year, Miikmaa also exhibited his works, and it is possible that this painting was among them. It is likely that Miikmaa painted his native area of Hiiumaa.
