Karin Luts

Prior to the World War II Karin Luts became undoubtedly the most famous Estonian female artist. During that period she became mainly known as a painter, even though she studied graphical art in ”Pallas”. After the forced leave from Estonia, Luts took up more active graphical researches. Being always aware of the latest tendencies in the world art, Luts was still able to preserve her personal handwriting. In the year of accomplishing of ”Muinasjutulind” she visited the biannual of Venice, but having seen the exposed pop-art she was disappointed and wrote into her diary: ”Only combinations of extremely common everyday objects, without any esprit, mysticism, poetry, just realism”. Here we can see the creative credo of Luts, which is undoubtedly placed onto the background of ”Muinasjutulind”.
