Juhan Muks’ landscapes are not so much about landscapes as about colours. We can see the rhythmic light tones of the vertical brushstrokes, contrasted with a dark green spruce. This exploration of colour draws on the search for harmony that is characteristic of Estonian art history, where instead of contrasts, sharp cuts, and jarring contrasts, the most natural fusion is sought. The choice of season is striking: it seems that Muks has painted at the beginning of autumn. While this time of year might offer melancholy and withering, Muks sees a buzz and a zest for life.
